MALE INFERTILITYCauses of Male InfertlityThe most common cause of male infertility is poor sperm quality or a low sperm count. If you have little to no sperm, poor sperm motility (the ability to move) or abnormally shaped sperm, your sperm may not be able to fertilise your partner's eggs on its own, There are many ways to improve sperm quality
Other causes of male infertility include: Blockages – For a small percentage of men a blockage of of the vessel that carries sperm from the testicles to the penis, known as the the Vas Deferens, can cause male infertility. It may become blocked for any number of reasons, including injury or disease. Varicocele – This is a kind of “varicose vein”. A swelling that appears on one or both testicles. These raise the temperature in the testes, which can affect sperm production. Varicoceles account for almost 40% of the causes of male infertility. Not all men with varicoceles have problems with their sperm and, although surgery can improve the sperm count and quality, it doesn't necessarily improve your chances of conception Infectious Diseases – STD’s (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) or diseases from childhood such as mumps, can cause sterility or low sperm count. Hormonal Dysfunction – Diseases that effect the level of male hormones can effect a man's fertility. Chronic Diseases – Certain non-hormonal conditions such as diabetes or hypertension can effect male fertility. Erectile Dysfunction – the inability to obtain or maintain an erection can cause male infertility Ejaculation problems – this can be a complete absence of ejaculate or retrograde ejaculation, which is when the sperm is retained or flushed up into the bladder instead. Sperm allergy - It is possible for the body to develop antibodies that can kill your own sperm. This happens most often after a vasectomy, testicular torsion (where the testicle twists inside the scrotum), infection or an accident. Sperm allergy is estimated to be the cause of male infertility in about 3 per cent of cases. Injury – To the penis or testicles can effect fertility in men
